This 2-CD set is compiled from 11 solo concerts John Denver had in Moscow, Tallin and Leningrad in 1985, the first concerts of an American artist in the Soviet Union after the expiry of the cultural exchange agreement between the US and the USSR. In my humble opinion, this is probably the best live John Denver CD that was ever released. The sound is crystal clear, John's voice is at its best, the guitar playing is amazing, the choice of songs just stunning. Besides the normal hit songs you will find gems and fan favorites like Boy From the Country, Bells of Rhymney, or It's About Time. Special highlights are The Gold & Beyond (written for the Winter Olympics 1984 in Sarayevo and originally recorded with a huge orchestra and choir) and "Heart to Heart". Stripped down to just vocal and a guitar, some songs appear totally new, and the artistry in John's songwriting shines even brighter.
John Denver was a folk singer, a country singer, a pop singer, a singer of western songs. Call him whatever you want. But first of all he was a great singer, a brilliant songwriter, and a first class entertainer.
Notwithstanding the historical significance of these recordings, the album is really outstanding for the music alone.
