Detailed Description
The Stanford Concert
2-CD SET
An historic recording, filling in the missing link between the black listing of The Weavers in the early fifties and the folk music boom launched by The Kingston Trio in 1958.
Frequently referred to as the West Coast Weavers, the Gateway Singers were Travis Edmonson (later of Bud & Travis), Lou Gottlieb (later of The Limeliters), Elmerlee Thomas, and Jerry Walter. Although their sound was reminiscent of the Weavers, in all other respects the Gateways were very much original. Unlike any act that preceded them, as the house band at the hungry i for most of the 1955-1957 period, the Gateways were emulated by other folk acts.
Also an historic recording as it was made in the early days of stereo at a time when most people didnt even know what stereo was and there were no consumer stereo tape recorders on the market. The tapes were recorded on a home made stereo recorder at 15ips, and were carefully stored for 50 years before being sent to Travis Edmonson, the last survivor of the Gateway Singers.
