Suddenly, doo-wop and surf and rhythm and blues were all in imminent danger of being passé on the Top 40, swept off the airwaves by the Animals, The Zombies and the Troggs.

The best of these exciting young groups were true innovators in their own right, advancing the rock idiom exponentially with their songwriting brilliance.
