Steve Goodman was a songwriting genius and a visionary of folk music. His ability to paint accurate portrayals of uniquely American concepts allowed him to stand among the upper echelon of artist in his time.
His songs were recorded by Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, John Denver, Arlo Guthrie, Jimmy Buffett, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and many others. He was also instrumental in launching the career of his friend and running mate John Prine.
Steve remained a vibrant force on the music scene through the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1982, it was dsisclosed he had been battling leukemia since 1969. The disease took hi life in 1984 at the age of 36.
On November 13, 1997, 4200 of Steve's friends, fans, and admirers gathered at Chicago's historic Medinah Temple to celebrate the gifted musician who had touched their lives. There a stellar artist lineup performed Steve's songs to a crowd of those who loved him.
